Frye Flagship Store Soho, New York City

This modern approach to Frye‘’s 148-year heritage as a shoemaker features exposed brick walls, decorative columns, 10-inch-wide reclaimed oak flooring, reclaimed barn doors, and 15-foot black tin ceilings accentuated by custom-made brasslighting pendants. The site, formerly a century-old cast-iron factory, allowed for exposed raw materials including brick walls to create a refined industrial environment. Items relating to the shoe manufacturing process, including workbences and toolboxes, were used to create lighting fixtures, furniture pieces, and merchandise displays. The cashwrap is constructed from vintage industrial drawers and blackened steel panels. The lighting, a mix of LED and metal halide including custom-designed dimmable decorative fixtures and daylighting sensors, helped to obtain LEED Silver certification for the store. Miniature LED lighting provides accent lighting across a field of 8,000 brass rings (typically used in Frye‘s boots) hung from leather straps to create a sea of sparkle in the main merchandise area.
