Outstanding Merit

TEC Urban Eatery Toronto Eaton Centre, Toronto

A mix of 24 chain and independent restaurants serving the mall are brought together by carefully crafted design criteria to ensure a singular vision. The underlying theme is stylized street maps of the downtown city grid on bright red lacquered panels and custom laminated glass. The red grids are the signature element at the entrance and backdrop to the seating area. The immense space is broken up into clusters of tenants alternating feature seating niches, open spaces, and communal tables, with bar-height tables lining the perimeter and low seating in the interior providing a different experience for customers each time they return. Laminated Russian plywood as a ceiling treatment defines one of the seating zones and was used in custom millwork, such as tables and island tenant fixtures. Porcelaintile covers floors and corridor walls.
